Config

I led the branding and environmental design for Figma's first-ever design conference, creating the complete visual identity and all event collateral for over 1,000 attendees.

Background

Config was Figma's first user conference, held in February 2020 in San Francisco, CA. The goal was to create a physical manifestation of the Figma community—a space for meaningful conversations on topics like team culture, design processes, and design ethics. More than 1,000 people came together to learn, share, and explore, with sessions also streamed online. The conference centered on the theme of open design:  sharing, remixing, and building on each other's work, and featured workshops, lightning talks, keynotes, and roundtable discussions. The first Config established a format and visual language that would define Figma's conference identity for years to come.

The Config 2020 visual identity took Figma's core brand and pushed it through a distortion pedal, stretching and fragmenting the letterforms into a playful, modular system that shapeshifted depending on context. Each letter of the "Config" logotype was replaced by an abstract geometric shape derived from its own form, and the result was a mark that was unique at differents scales.

The shape language became sculptural as three-dimensional signage hung above the venue entrance, and lent an energetic, springy tone to wayfinding, programs, name badges, notebooks, stickers, pencils, and more.
The system was cohesive without being rigid, reflecting the conference's spirit of open, collaborative design: a brand built to be remixed.

My Role

Working with In-fo.co, I led the branding and environmental design, responsible for developing the visual identity of Config from concept through execution across all touchpoints.

Specifically, I:

Developed visual design directions for the conference, establishing the overall aesthetic and brand language
Designed all event collateral, including wayfinding signage, stage backdrops, and printed programs
Designed the event website, translating the conference brand into a digital experience
Created swag and merchandise that extended the brand beyond the event itself
Ensured visual consistency across physical and digital environments throughout the venue
